Certified Powertex UK tutor Jan at Jan’s Crafty Matters shares with us her story. She shows a bit of a determination and hard work goes a long way. Now she has a great set up for her workshops. Her very own studio and a group of regular students to her workshops.

When I became a Powertex tutor I had a dream of having my own studio, where I could be creative but also run workshops in my own space. We would all love our ideas to turn into reality as quickly as we dream them. However, as it’s happened with my Powertex tutor colleagues, I would have to wait a little while for them to become a reality. In the beginning I started with what I had my dining room made a perfect studio and the garden made an inspiring work space on sunny days.  Circumstances changed as it does with so many of us when I then moved to a flat. My powertex work area became smaller, and I had to think up different ways I could share my passion with others.

I tried hiring a hall, but the circumstances weren’t ideal for what I needed. I knew that there were other avenues out there for me and my love of creating, teaching and sharing my Powertex passion kept me on the right path. My break came when I managed to get a permanent slot at Basingstoke Hobbycraft. Students were able to see Powertex in action and couldn’t wait to book on to a class!

My Powertex journey was progressing. I managed to get a following of ladies who came to Hobbycraft regularly. I still had my dream, and the idea was always in the back of my mind but with the success of my classes, it made its way down to the bottom of the priority list.

Then an opportunity arose where I was contacted through advertising I’d done on social media. I was offered another space to hold workshops in Bracknell.  Workshops got busy! And I was having to take my Powertex stash up and down the stairs to my flat at least twice a week. This wasn’t ideal. It led me to enquire about a permanent space in my new workshop location.  They were delighted to have me, but the area wasn’t going to suit my needs. Without being deterred I continued on with my dream.

My close friend Tina, told me her partner had outgrown her creation space in their flat (she makes beautiful mosaic mirrors) and a light bulb lit between us – why not share a workspace; if we found a one that would suit our needs it could work!

After extensive searching we finally found our dream – a unit big enough for both of us, that matched all our needs.  We moved in on Sunday 28th October and I am so happy.  As soon as I walk in the door, all my worries disappear and I have a little bubble to work on my Powertex ideas, future workshops and items to sell. Who knows what the future will bring but I am going to be continuing to work hard at making this studio dream a success, enabling me to be here for years to come. Workshops in the studio are now being planned for the New Year. And I couldn’t think of a better way to start it off.

It’s taken me some time to make my dreams a reality but in that time I never waived. I continued on through all life threw at me. I needed to learn from each opportunity that arose to get to this point and keep the faith that my hard work would come through. I had some horrible personal moments (the death of my Mum), some fantastic times (Powertex Tutor Retreats) and the love and understanding of dear friends and my family but finally I have my dream.  I have a good feeling that I may be in my lovely studio for several years to come.
